Memorabilia: Chauffeur-Gardener letter of acceptance

16th Jany., 1945

Mr. Robert Montgomery,
c/o Douglas,
Kaimhill Farm,
BRIDGE OF WEIR

Dear Sir,
Following upon your recent interview with Mrs.
Cuninghame I am writing to engage you as chauffeur-gardener in
Mrs. Cuninghame's service, your wages, to commence, to be £3
weekly, with free house at the Home Farm, as pointed out to
you, and coal, light and potatoes, a fortnight's notice to be
given on either side. It is understood that your wife will
give Mrs. Cuninghame her services at the Mansion House for 3/4
hours daily if required, but it is likely that Mrs. Cuninghame
will not require her every day. During the present
restriction on the use of petrol you will assist in the gardens
when you are not required to drive or look after the car, and
you will also assist at the Mansion House in the mornings as
handyman.

I shall be glad if you will advise me of the earliest
date upon which you can commence your duties at Craigends, and
you will have to let me have a green card so that no question
may arise with regard to your transfer from your present work.
The usual rule will apply regarding your removal, i.e.,
the expenses of your removal in will be borne by Mrs. Cuninghame,
while on the other hand you will bear your own expenses out upon
termination of your employment.

I return the references which accompanied your letter
of application, receipt of which you might acknowledge.

Your truly,
E L Mackillop
