Demolition of Craigends House, c.1967-1981

also Demolition of Craigends House

Like everyone else I was really disappointed when the remains of the house were demolished and am really sad that it no longer stands.

...one of the stories going round was that a joiner employed in the demolishing worked for no wages as long as he was allowed to keep the nails that held the roof tiles, seems they were all pretty heavy and made of copper.

Like a lot of people I enjoyed the grounds of the old manor for many years and when I went back as a "grown up" seeking historical enlightenment I was very disappointed to discover the manor had been demolished and plans were underway to build a housing estate. Funnily enough now one of my sisters lives about 100m from where the original arched entrance was.

I remember that I felt very sad when it was eventually demolished. We saw stone unicorn heads lying around I think that they might have decorated the ceilings but I'm not sure. I wish we'd taken one as a memento.

Craigends House was partly demolished in 1967 by Taylor Woodrow, and dormitory growth then started in earnest.
