03 April 1779
Sir James Campbell (Lieut-Colonel), Captains Earl of Glencairn, Craigends (Alexander Cuninghame of Craigends), and Dunmure, and Lieutenants Sir William Cuninghame and McDowall of the West Fencibles, Lord Monboddo, Mr Crosbie, Lady Colville and Lady Anne Erskine and Miss Susie Dunlop dined with us. Major Montgomery was engaged, so was the only one of the mess at Fortune's that was not with us. I was steady jovial, and passed an excellent day, though without much other conversation than social dialogue; and although I drank freely, I was not drunk. In the evening my wife was in uncommon good humour, just as during courtship. It was very fine.
